What is The
Reno
Guide?

Reno was founded when an agreement between the Central Pacific Railroad and the owner of the only bridge and hotel, Myron C. Lake, was signed in 1868.  As was true of many new western frontier towns, Reno was named after a Union Army Officer, General Jesse Lee Reno.  The town boomed and grew rapidly as one of the main stops along the railroad line between Northern California and the silver mines of Virginia City and Comstock Lode.

The State Legislature Legalized gambling in 1931 and casinos and hotels sprang up almost immediately leading to the robust tourism industry that exists today.  However, while many people think of Reno strictly as a gambling and entertainment city, the truth is that it is surrounded by some of the best outdoor recreation in the region.  This combination of plush accommodations with non-stop entertainment and activities such as skiing, hiking, boating, fishing, and cycling has landed Reno on many top 10 lists for “best places to live”.  Lake Tahoe (which is only 25 minutes away) is one of the West’s most beautiful natural wonders and is littered with outdoor sports opportunities.

Tourism is the mainstay of the economy and is as active in the winter as it is in the summer thanks to the numerous ski areas that dot the surrounding Sierra Mountains.  Reno boasts its own large airport and direct flights from most parts of the country are possible.  Despite the fact that gambling is a big portion of the draw to Reno, the city is not dominated by it, unlike its big sister Las Vegas.

This website is part of the rapidly growing collection of city and town websites called Placez.  We are looking for someone who has intimate knowledge of Reno and the surrounding area to become a Placez associate and continue to build the RenoNevadaGuide.com.  If you are interested visit us at www.Placez.com for more information.
